Asphalt Mastics and Grouts

Asphalt mastics used for waterproofing floors and similar structures, but not intended for pavement, consist of mixtures of asphalt cement, mineral filler, and mineral aggregate, which can be heated at about 400F to a sufficiently soft condition to be poured and troweled into place. The raw ingredients may be mixed on the job or may be premixed, formed into cakes, and merely heated on the job (ASTM D491).
Bituminous grouts are suitable for waterproofing above or below ground level as protective coatings. They also can be used for membrane waterproofing or for bedding and filling the joints of brickwork. Either asphaltic or coal-tar pitch materials of dampproofing and waterproofing grade are used, together with mineral aggregates as coarse as sand.
